The Growing Project is an amazing organization in our community. If you have ever seen them in action you would be amazed. They are a nonprofit (501-c-3) organization founded in 2008 that is committed to making fresh, nourishing, regional food accessible to everyone, particularly under-resourced families in Larimer county.
They have 3 outreach programs that promote community gardening, advocacy, and education:
- Urban Foods Outreach: Creates residential gardens, where excess produce is donated to those in need.
- Garden Time: A Horticulture Therapy program for at-risk youth.
- Glean Team: Emergency food rescue effort coordinating with local farmers to glean excess produce from the fields and donate it to families in need.
Why should you care?
Since 2000, Colorado has experienced the 3rd largest increase in food insecurity in the nation. In that same time period, the Larimer County Food Bank more than tripled the number of people it serves. These are people in our community who have limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate foods.
The Growing Project is trying to raise funds for a truck so they can continue to do all the good work they have started.
